The wine has a moderate 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.6 g\/l acidity. Medium-bodied and balanced, it shows fine, well-integrated tannins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt aged for 16 months in used, neutral, well-seasoned oak barrels. 76,435 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in March 2024.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWine \u0026amp; Soul is the project of couple Jorge Serôdio and Sandra Tavares. They have 45 hectares of vines across different Douro villages, 80% of which are old vines. Total production is about 180,000 bottles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2023 was a rainy year with moderate temperatures, letting the soil recover its water reserves after several years of severe drought, particularly 2022. Spring was stable, with good flowering and fruit set, giving higher yields than in 2022 and 2020.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSummer was hot but without extreme temperatures, allowing slow, balanced ripening. The grapes showed good phenolic ripeness, well-defined aromas and good acidity. The 2023 reds were made with great precision, showing restrained ripeness, good freshness and balance, and integrated oak. The wine is harmonious and balanced, with a bright ruby colour and an expressive nose of wild berries, flowers and herbs, with delicate spice and a non-intrusive smoky touch, coming across as a triumph over the adverse conditions of the year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has a restrained 13.5% alcohol and matured in French barrels for 22 months. It's much more approachable than the Pintas from the same vintage. 4,226 bottles were produced. It has 89 grams per litre of residual sugar. It was due to be bottled in two weeks, but this was already the final blend. Even after a few days open, the wine stayed closed, muscular and concentrated, dominating the palate and never letting go. On opening it was fragrant and delicious, but even then showed lots of structure and evident concentration. As it aired, the concentration and power increased — unlike many 2016s (a year Niepoort did not declare).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTasting it after several days open showed that it had closed down aromatically, but also proved definitively that this is a traditional wine, made for long ageing. Dry, austere and with a prolonged finish, it's brilliant. It's hard to think of any reason not to consider this wine perfect right now — Niepoort says it's the best he has ever made. It's certainly the best I've tasted from him and a strong contender for “Wine of the Vintage”, though not the only one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, this wine demands patience. Nothing about it says “drink me now”. It should age magnificently. As usual for a Vintage of this quality, we included 100% stems in the vinification. Soon after harvest, the wines making up the final Port were racked and then aged over winter in vats in the Douro, before being moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2012. There, we again did countless tastings to find the ideal blends for a Niepoort Vintage Port. The grapes showed good phenolic ripeness, well-defined aromas and good acidity. It was made with the estate's oldest vines, planted about 120 years ago. The nearly 30 different grapes were picked together on 28 September and vinified, partly destemmed, in stone lagares for 10 days. Ageing took place in French oak barrels and lasted 22 months. The barrels weren't new, but they marked the wine with intense aromas of sweet spices, vanilla and cinnamon, as well as notes of toast and smoke, giving it a balsamic personality. It also shows notes of ripe wild berries and herbs, with a sense of ripeness without excess. It has 14% alcohol and soft acidity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt reminded me of some very good young Ribera del Duero wines, with power, concentration and generous use of oak, but also balance and elegance. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins and a medium to full-bodied palate.
