It has a velvety, precise, even palate, with great freshness and balance, flavours of red fruit and crushed stone and a citrus touch of freshness. There's much more depth and complexity compared with the already exceptional La Montesa. It's fine and elegant, with very fine tannins and a precise, clean finish. It's also powerful and ripe at 14.5% alcohol, keeping a pH of 3.5 and 5.3 grams of acidity. 46,400 bottles produced. It's also far from ready to drink. As it breathes, the tannins start to show and the wine gains tension. It goes from restrained to powerful in an instant. The mid-palate elegance is always admirable, but the structure says it needs a few more years in the cellar — and it probably won't be at its peak even then. Aromatic, fresh and marked by savoury strawberry notes, this precise red looks like a big winner, but still has something to prove in bottle. This is the first year I've tasted it, so we start here and will follow its development over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWinemaker and owner Jorge Moreira said, describing this new vineyard:\u003cbr\u003e\"Since we bought Quinta do Poeira in 2001, we knew we'd have to find another old vineyard. It may not be as powerful as its predecessors, but it's much more flavourful and fresh, while keeping reasonable concentration. There's still good structure, though the tannins are ripe. I liked it a lot. The fruit expression is simply brilliant, though the structure is a step behind. Even so, few wines in this report showed such lively flavour. It can be drunk young. It should also age reasonably well. The first pour shows some fruit, some oak and strength, but then the power simply takes over. It's very well made, but note that it's a wine for a collector with a cellar. It needs at least a few more years of ageing. It's not completely inaccessible right now, but it would be a waste to open this rarity today. It should hold for two decades, perhaps more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe producer tends to label its top red each vintage as Fojo or Vinha do Fojo (in a practice similar to Barca Velha). This could have been Fojo. It isn't imported; in Portugal it costs about 85 euros. From very old vines planted at the end of the 19th century, only 12,000 bottles were produced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis issue features the debut in our pages of Margarida Borges's Vinho Verde project. The estate is Casa da Bouça, on the right bank of the River Sousa, in the Lousada area. There are 10 hectares of vines with different plots and ages. See the tasting notes for details. They're all very limited, very dry, still wines. It's always interesting to see new wines and new projects. The style leans towards pure power. Some may even border on strident. We'll see if they gain balance with a year or more in bottle. Perhaps so.
