Vajra 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole at first shows a fragile side, but gradually gains much more momentum and focus as it opens in the glass. This is always one of my favourite wines from this excellent producer, and I especially appreciate it for its delicate nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and a light salty touch reminiscent of peat moss. There's also a hint of struck stone or flint. All these small details emerge with impressive clarity in an epic vintage like 2021.

The grapes come from a seven-hectare vineyard at 400 to 480 metres, on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils.

For critic James Suckling, G.D.
