Description

Château Pichon Baron de Longueville 2021 is a historic edition from this prestigious Pauillac estate, with the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon ever used in its final blend (88%). It's widely praised for its precision, classic elegance and focused profile, reflecting a cooler, more technical vintage in Bordeaux.

The 2021 Pichon-Longueville Baron is showing very well in bottle, opening in the glass with notes of cassis, sweet berries and violets, intertwined with subtle hints of orange zest and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with good depth at the core, vibrant acidity and sweet tannins that assert themselves on the delicately structured finish. Its serious, slightly reserved profile reflects the unusually high percentage (89%) of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2021 finished its élevage in large wooden vats for a month and a half, was racked slightly less than usual and was fined only with a small amount of gelatine rather than egg white, as has been the practice here for several years.

The brilliant 2020 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers inviting aromas of sweet berries and cassis mixed with notes of pipe tobacco, damp earth, pencil shavings and liquorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, its velvety attack builds into a concentrated mid-palate framed by rich, finely textured tannins, ending with a long, vibrant finish.

A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, it's a true classic that is a little less demonstrative at first than the sensual 2019, but will prove just as excellent with time.

Aromas of dark berries and ripe cherries with notes of cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and liquorice introduce the 2022 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, a full-bodied, complex, multidimensional wine, deep, dense and vibrant, with remarkable concentration, silky tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Harmonious and serious, it hints at the vintage's inherent opulence while staying classic and controlled. This blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot was bottled in June.

The 2023 Pichon-Longueville Baron was impressive, showing aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, violet, spice and smouldering embers, with the new oak almost imperceptible. Medium to full-bodied, deep and complex, it has remarkable balance, built around a generous fruit core and concentrated mid-palate framed by fine, powdery tannins. It ends long, mineral and persistent. It achieves a rare synthesis of classic identity and seductive charm.
