Reviewed by: Monica Larner

The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows an evolved bouquet, with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flowers and autumn leaves. In the background come notes of dark liquorice, wet slate, cola and grilled rosemary. The tannins are fine and dry. As a result, I recommend a mid-term drinking window.

Il Poggione is one of the standout wineries around the picturesque village of Sant’Angelo in Colle. Its vineyards sit at altitudes from 150 to 450 metres above sea level. The vines are between 25 and 59 years old.

Wine Spectator gave the Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2019 a score of 94 points.

Aromatic and Flavour Profile: Broad notes of plum and cherry stand out, complemented by mineral nuances of iron, plus tobacco and underbrush.

Structure: It has a plump texture that balances its dense structure, with vibrant acidity keeping the wine focused and balanced.

Conclusion and Potential: The review notes that another year of ageing will let the finish extend, helping the wine reach its full potential. The suggested drinking window is 2026 to 2042.
