Description
The Chocolate Block 2023 is the 22nd vintage of this iconic South African red from the prestigious Boekenhoutskloof winery, in Swartland. Known for its consistency and complex aromatic profile, the blend is led by Syrah and keeps its status as one of South Africa's most popular wines.
The Wine AdvocateRP 91Reviewed by: Monica Larner
With a generous production of 1.2 million bottles, the Boekenhoutskloof 2023 Swartland The Chocolate Block is one of the most popular South African wines in restaurants and retail. The blend is 74% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cinsault and 1% co-fermented Viognier. Eighty per cent of the grapes are farmed by the winery's in-house team. No new oak is used except for the Cabernet Sauvignon; the rest matures in neutral barrels.
Owner Marc Kent says the wine is on its way to becoming officially organic. According to him, people underestimate the influence of Cinsault, which helps soften the rusticity of the other grapes and, together with Grenache, contributes to a more perfumed style.
The Chocolate Block is a brand in its own right, representing a fruity, approachable, food-friendly red with a medium to full-bodied texture and pleasant smoothness.
Boekenhoutskloof is a prestigious winery in Franschhoek, renowned for its quality. It was founded three centuries ago by French Huguenots, despite its Afrikaans name being unusual for the French-settled Franschhoek. Current winemaker Marc Kent keeps strong ties with France, visiting at least once a year for inspiration from the northern Rhône, especially Cornas. In 2020 Boekenhoutskloof was named South Africa's best winery by the Platter's guide.
“Undiscovered” plots with huge potential. Meticulous work to achieve a red with concentrated colour, flavour and tannic structure. Most of the Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault vines come from Swartland, a hot, arid area where vines sink their roots deep into the subsoil. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards in Franschhoek and historic Stellenbosch. A wine with plenty of personality.
The Chocolate Block 2023 immediately shows an intense, seductive aromatic profile, dominated by black cherries, blueberries and ripe plums, wrapped in blackcurrant notes and a subtle perfumed touch that adds complexity and elegance.
PalateOn the palate it's delicate, balanced and refined, with polished tannins and an enveloping texture. Blackcurrants stand out, with nuances of fine spice – cumin and white pepper – intertwined with hints of liquorice, cocoa and a breath of garrigue (Mediterranean herbs). The finish is velvety, persistent and harmonious, leaving an impression of sophistication and depth.
A wine that masterfully expresses the elegance and unique character of its terroir, combining intensity, balance and aromatic complexity.
