Description
Kimbrel Mortórios 2022 is a premium single-plot red made in the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro Valley, Portugal, by the Luso-American wine project Kimbrel Wines. Released in early 2026, it comes from old vines on terraces once abandoned during the historic phylloxera crisis, sites traditionally known in the region as "mortórios" or "murtórios"
Kimbrel Mortórios 2022: Tasting Note
Colour & aromaA deep, concentrated ruby with intense violet nuances showing its youth and excellent extraction. On the nose it shows great complexity and aromatic expression, with ripe black fruit such as blackberry and blueberry, wrapped in delicate floral notes of rockrose. The mineral component, marked by the schist terroir, is well defined and harmoniously integrated with subtle hints of fine spice and an elegant toasty touch from oak ageing.
PalateOn the palate it's structured, dense and enveloping, combining power and precision. The vibrant acidity typical of the Cima Corgo gives balance and freshness, while firm, ripe, satiny tannins carry the tasting with great elegance.
FinishThe finish is very long and persistent, dominated by ripe black fruit and schist minerality, suggesting excellent capacity to develop in bottle over the coming years.
Producer Details
The Estate: Based at the historic Quinta do Roncão (in Alijó, in the Roncão Valley), a property dating back to 1851.
The Partnership: The business combines David Sylvester's international vision with the technical know-how of Portuguese winemaker Isaac Campelo, who makes the wines and is a partner in the project.
The Concept: The producer works "Napa Valley style": precision micro-vinifications (very small lots), rigorous attention to detail, sustainable practices and even night harvests.
Production: Deliberately limited and focused on the luxury segment, capped at around 20,000 bottles a year (split between DOC Douro wines and Port)
