Description

Senderos de Ukan 2022 is a high-quality Spanish red made by Ukan Winery in the prestigious Rioja Alavesa. Made by winemaker Koldo Eguren, it's the winery's most approachable, fresh expression, focused on pure fruit and the typicity of the local terroir.

The more delicate 2022 Senderos de Ukan has more red fruit and a higher-toned, more expressive nose. I think it matches the aim of making an elegant, balanced, fruit-driven wine with good structure and freshness, ready to enjoy early. It has a bright floral nose with a spicy touch, good ripeness and 14.4% alcohol, a medium-bodied palate and fine tannins. It was selected from five vineyards, fermented with selected yeasts in concrete and aged in used 225-litre French oak barrels for 11 months. 19,200 bottles and 800 magnums were produced. It was bottled in July 2024.

Ukan Winery is Koldo Eguren's project in Laguardia, where he makes his wines with help from winemaker Bequer Prieto. He has 9.5 hectares of small plots and produces 35,000 bottles a year.

With an impressive 94 points from the Guía Peñín, Senderos de Ukan 2022 ranks among the wines considered excellent, standing out for its quality and character.

In the glass it's a bright cherry colour with purple glints showing its youth and energy. On the nose it's intense and clean, with enveloping aromas of ripe red fruit and wild berries, elegantly combined with nuances of balsamic herbs and a touch of sweet spice from barrel ageing.

On the palate it's balanced and structured, with a very pleasant fruity texture. The tannins are ripe and well integrated, while the acidity brings freshness and lengthens the finish, making it persistent and harmonious.
