96 points James Suckling, 95 points Tim Atkin, and 93 points Robert Parker
The 2019 vintage of Marqués de Murrieta is a new step forward in the history of this Rioja legend. Expressive, fluid and silky, it is a classic adapted to the new times. The winery's technical director, María Vargas, highlights this 2019 vintage (classified as Excellent by the Regulatory Council) for its "exceptional ripeness and impeccable texture".
James Suckling: A precise and refined red with notes of cherry, plum, slate, iron and powdery earth. Medium to full-bodied with sublime tannins, beautifully integrated into the wine. Structured but with very silky tannins. This is a carefully crafted and well thought out wine. Aged for two years in American oak (10% new) and 14 months in bottle. Sophisticated and very pleasant to drink, but with great aging potential. Drink now or cellar.
Tim Atkin: Producing 1.2 million bottles of this Reserva is our “big challenge,” according to María Vargas, but it’s one she’s masterfully mastering. Combining Tempranillo with 6% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, this structured and intense red still retains its youthfulness. Masterfully aged in American oak, it displays flavors of Asian spice, blackberry, wild strawberry and licorice. 2026-2040.
The Wine Advocate: The Rioja Reserva 2019, the winery’s flagship wine, comes from 300 hectares of its own vineyards. Tempranillo is the backbone, making up 87% of the wine in this low-yield vintage, complemented by 6% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha. This is the second vintage at the new winery. It is a balsamic and spicy version—a wine with structure, aged longer in barrel, making it more traditional and serious. Mature, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.65 and 5.3 grams of acidity. They seek a balance between fruit and oak, prioritizing freshness. A year of greater power.
