- Luis Gutiérrez : This is a new rosé (at least for me). The 2023 Otto, slightly reductive and toasted, reminds me a bit of the claret from Dominio del Águila in Ribera del Duero. It is a serious and complex wine that goes beyond the usual themes of rosé wines, produced with a blend of red and white grapes (hence it is a claret!). It has maturity, power and elegance, with 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.3. The juice of all the red and white varieties fermented together, finishing in 600-liter barrels, where the wine matured for six to seven months. It has a medium-bodied palate, with a strong presence, fine tannins and a chalky finish. Give it a little more time in the bottle so that the toasted notes are fully integrated. 2,000 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in May 2024.
The super creative Oxer Bastegieta continues to release labels and wines full of personality, in this case, two new Rioja wines inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. In addition to his Rioja line, I also tasted one of his Txakoli and a red he produces in Toro. And there’s more news on the way, as he has purchased new vineyards and plans to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir! In Rioja, he owns 11.3 hectares, 6.8 in Bizkaiko Txakolina and 2.5 in Toro. Despite the total number of labels, production remains relatively small, at around 65,000 bottles.
