94 points José Peñin, 93 points Robert Parker, and 93 points James Suckling
The most famous wine from the Valladolid winery, a perfect reflection of Abadía Retuerta, with a unique style that has been maintained harvest after harvest. A red wine made from a selection of the best grapes from each of its vineyards, which combines the richness of Tempranillo with the intensity and elegance of other varieties that make up the blend, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, among others. The result is harmonious and pleasant.
The Wine Advocate: 2020 was a cooler and rainier year, following in the footsteps of years like 2016 and 2018. The 2020 Selección Especial, made with 70% Tempranillo, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 4% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, is harmonious and moderately ripe, with 14% alcohol and a pleasantly balanced freshness. It was aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels (35%), a third of which were new. The harvest was done before the rains, and the wine has more herbaceous aromas, with a slightly more Bordeaux, balsamic and even minty profile. The oak is well integrated and blends with the fruit. A total of 474,626 bottles were produced, and there are multiple lots of this wine.

James Suckling: Grilled herbs, undergrowth and dark cherries on the nose follow on to a medium to full-bodied palate with plenty of grainy tannins. A juicy, savory finish. Drink now or cellar.
