Bacardí was born on 4 February 1862 in Santiago de Cuba, when Don Facundo Bacardí Massó bought a small distillery and developed a lighter, smoother rum. His wife, Doña Amalia, suggested the bat as its emblem after spotting bats in the distillery — and it became known as 'el ron del murciélago'.
