The 2021 Finca San Martín is a varietal Tempranillo from the youngest vines. It fermented in stainless steel and aged for 16 months in oak barrels, 60% American and 40% second-use French oak, during which it was racked three times.
It's a typical modern Rioja Alavesa red, with the depth and completeness of the vintage. It's fleshy and fruit-centred, ripe without excess, with 14.5% alcohol, excellent freshness and balanced acidity, polished tannins and a smooth texture. The wine shows less oak influence and more of the character of the vineyard and region.
It offers excellent value for money — and it's the best vintage to date!
James Suckling: Elegant notes of vanilla, spice, red and black plums, red cherries and a smoky touch. Very fine, creamy tannins. A rather long and pleasurable Rioja crianza, already very attractive. Drink now or hold.
Tim Atkin: Made in what Julio Sáenz calls the "semi-Atlantic" 2021 vintage, this is a refreshing, well-structured blend of Tempranillo with 2% Mazuelo from four plots on the Torre de Oña estate. Mineral, focused and balanced, with flavours of wild blackberry, red cherry and pomegranate, discreet American oak and 40% French oak. Best drunk 2026–2032.
