Bairrada (Fogueira), Portugal · since 1989
Mário Sérgio founded Quinta das Bágeiras in 1989 in the village of Fogueira, bringing together the vineyards of both his grandfathers; the name came from locals, who would say 'there goes Fausto to his Quinta das Bágeiras'. With the support of his father, Abel, 12 hectares that had sold wine in bulk began producing wines under their own label, made with minimal intervention.

Description
The name Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno may not mean much to the less attentive, but he is nothing less than the great mind behind Quinta das Bágeiras's great wines. The history of Quinta das Bágeiras spans three generations, yet it was only in 1989, under Mário Sérgio, that Quinta das Bágeiras wines began to be bottled and sold, quickly becoming a benchmark in Bairrada and in Portugal.
Quinta das Bágeiras Pai Abel Tinto 2017 is a true expression of Bairrada's tradition and mastery. Refined and polished, it has a deep ruby colour and an identity strongly shaped by Baga. On the nose it shows a subtle perfume of wild berries, undergrowth and moss, wrapped in a spicy firmness of balsamic ‘nuances’. On the palate it surprises with its vibrancy and balance, belying any excessive alcohol. This vintage, the fruit of ever more refined work, translates into a wine of great depth and longevity that borders on perfection. A remarkable example of Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno's wise hand.
