Monica Larner: Compared to Bricco delle Viole, Coste di Rose is distinguished by its sandstone soils at lower altitudes, between 340 and 350 meters above sea level. There is great variability in the soils, and as they change, the Nebbiolo behaves differently, acquiring new aromas and textural qualities along the way. The GD Vajra 2019 Barolo Coste di Rose has a darker core of fruit, with dusty earthy tones and hints of campfire ash. The grape skins were quite thick in 2019, which resulted in less intervention with cap submersion and other extractive methods. The great beauty of this wine is in the mouthfeel, which is rich, firm and silky. Coste di Rose was first produced in 2015.
In my opinion, the most interesting wine portfolio in Piedmont is that carefully crafted by GD Vajra. Given the variety of flavors and the diversity of local grapes used, my annual tasting at this winery is always one of my favorites. This year, I tasted the wines with Isidoro Vaira, one of the three brothers who run the winery alongside his sister Francesca and brother Giuseppe. His parents, Milena and Aldo Vaira, are also actively involved in the winery, making it a dynamic, family-run project.
