Description
Baigorri Finca la Canoca 2023 is a limited-production red from Spain's prestigious Rioja Alavesa, made by Bodegas Baigorri. It stands out as a faithful expression of its terroir, using old-vine Tempranillo from a specific plot.
Baigorri Finca La Canoca 2023 received 93 points from the team at Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate).
The Wine Advocatereview, usually by Luis Gutiérrez for Spanish wines, highlights this wine for its impressive purity of fruit and the freshness typical of a high-altitude vineyard.
AromaOn the nose it's extremely clean and expressive, with aromas of black and red fruit — such as cherry and blackberry — alongside subtle notes of aromatic herbs and a delicate mineral background recalling slate and chalk.
PalateOn the palate it shows excellent balance between structure and freshness. Though full-bodied, it keeps remarkable elegance, with well-integrated tannins and a smooth, enveloping, almost unctuous texture.
FinishThe finish is long and persistent, clearly reflecting the identity of the Samaniego terroir it comes from.
The high score is also linked to the 2023 harvest conditions, which favoured fresher, more elegant wines than the previous year. This particularly benefited the old vines (over 60 years) of Finca La Canoca, at more than 600 metres.
Often compared with the same winery's “Vino de Garage”, this wine stands apart with a profile centred more on finesse and mineral freshness than on power alone.
Baigorri Finca La Canoca 2023 received 93 points from James Suckling, who highlighted its aromatic depth and serious character.
AromaOn the nose it shows great complexity, with notes of wild berries and ripe plums, nuances of toasted herbs and a mineral touch evoking slate. On the palate it's structured and enveloping, with a firm, slightly chewy texture, balancing concentration with freshness from the vineyard's altitude.
Altogether, a contemporary wine where ripe fruit blends harmoniously with an elegant mineral expression.
