Alentejo (Vidigueira), Portugal · since 1997
A Vidigueira estate in the Lança family since 1920, when Ernesto dos Santos Lança bought it. For decades its grapes went to the local co-operative, until in 1997 António Lança set up as a producer-bottler and released the estate's first wine. The fourth generation now runs it, with Diogo Lopes as winemaker.

Description
The deep, intense colour in the glass draws you in, while the nose is powerful and captivating: layer upon layer of spice, earth and tobacco over a rich base of ripe black cherry, cassis and blueberry jam. You're hooked from the first sniff. Rich, round, juicy and mouth-coating, the palate offers black cherry and dark fruit jelly before moving on to brighter red fruit. Subtler hints of caramel and sweet oak complement the fruit beautifully. The big, classic structure of fine-grained tannin and firm acidity carries all the way through to a clean, fresh and spicy finish.
