Description
Marqués de Riscal XR 2021 is a modern, seductive red from Rioja, Spain, created as a tribute to the brand's former cellar masters — a tribute to all the cellar masters who, from Jean Pineau to today, have helped forge some of the finest history of Spanish wine at Marqués de Riscal.
Within its Historic Reserve, Marqués de Riscal had cellar wines such as Reserva Medoc and XR that never became commercial names. In the style of Bordeaux cellar foremen, the winemaker chalked the word XR on barrels in which he found special characteristics not found in others. These wines were never sold, but were always a benchmark for the cellar master. The custom lasted almost a century, between the 1869 and 1964 vintages.
According to the 2026 edition of the Guía Peñín, Marqués de Riscal XR 2021 scored a remarkable 95 points, confirming its high quality among Rioja reds.
Tasting Summary (Guía Peñín)
The wine has a deep, intense cherry colour, still very young, with few signs of evolution and obvious ageing potential. On the nose it shows a rich, captivating aromatic profile, with notes of liquorice and spices such as cinnamon and black pepper, alongside concentrated ripe fruit. The oak is well integrated and discreet, adding complexity without dominating.
On the palate it shows freshness and elegance, with fine, well-crafted tannins giving a smooth texture. Despite its good structure, it stays balanced and easy to enjoy. The finish is persistent and long, marked by balsamic nuances that leave a sophisticated, lasting impression.
