Poças
Douro, Portugal · since 1918
Founded in 1918 by Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior, the house began by selling grape spirit to Port shippers. In 1932 it received Quinta das Quartas in settlement of a debt and started making wine. It is still run by the same family, now in its fourth generation, with three estates, one in each Douro sub-region, and 76 hectares of vines.

Wine profile
Body
This wine: 4 out of 5 — closer to «full».
How heavy and full the wine feels in your mouth — from light like skimmed milk to rich like cream. It comes mainly from alcohol, extract and, in sweet wines, sugar.
Wine profile
Tannin
This wine: 4 out of 5 — closer to «firm».
Tannins come from grape skins, seeds and oak. You feel them as a pleasant drying grip on gums and tongue — from silky and velvety to firm and chewy.
Wine profile
Acidity
This wine: 3 out of 5 — right in the middle.
The freshness that makes your mouth water, like a squeeze of lemon. It gives a wine tension, length and ageing potential, and makes it great with food.
Wine profile
Alcohol
This wine: 5 out of 5 — closer to «high» (14.5% vol.).
Alcohol brings warmth and body. Still wines usually sit between about 11% and 15% ABV, while fortified wines such as Port sit around 19–20%.
Wine profile
Sweetness
This wine: 1 out of 5 — closer to «dry».
The residual sugar you can taste. EU label guide for still wines: dry up to ~4 g/L, medium-dry up to ~12 g/L, medium-sweet up to ~45 g/L, sweet above that.

Description
Poças Fora da Série Uppercut is a special-edition red that challenges Douro conventions as a multi-vintage blend (non-vintage), combining wines from different years (such as 2015 to 2023) to achieve a specific profile.
Grandes Escolhas: The blend has several grapes, led by Touriga Francesa. Very well designed, with very ripe red fruit, plenty of structure, polished edges and fine tannins, with a chemical and lightly floral side. Enveloping on the palate, you sense the balance between the components, and harmony dominates the whole tasting. It's really hard to believe it's a multi-vintage blend. The finish leaves a good trail, long and full of flavour
Poças Fora da Série Uppercut recently received a positive review from James Suckling, consolidating the brand's strategy of bringing disruptive Douro wines to the international stage. In Grandes Escolhas' view, wines like Uppercut (blending vintages) are valued for the complexity and elegance that barrel time and careful selection of old vines bring.
