Guru Vinha da Calçada 2022

Guru Vinha da Calçada 2022 is a prestigious Douro white made by the renowned Wine & Soul winery, by winemakers Sandra Tavares da Silva and Jorge Serôdio Borges. It's an exclusive single-plot wine from a century-old vineyard at 600 metres, on predominantly granite soils.

It shows a serene, deeply refined elegance. From a century-old high-altitude vineyard, fermented and aged in second-use foudre, it immediately shows remarkable aromatic finesse. On the nose come delicate notes of citrus and orange peel, wrapped in subtle hints of aromatic herbs and exotic spice, building a sophisticated, very precise aromatic profile.

The 2022 Guru Vinha da Calçada is a single-vineyard white from 0.4 hectares of century-old vines planted with a mix of native grapes, on quartz-rich granite soils at 600 metres, in the village of Pombal. It fermented and aged in foudre for two winters.

In the hot, dry 2022 harvest many vines stopped producing sugar, so the wines have lower alcohol, as here, with just 12%. It shows well-integrated acidity of 5.3 grams and good freshness (pH 3.3), though it lacks the complexity or liveliness of the fresher 2021.

1,550 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in May 2024.

Wine & Soul is the project of couple Jorge Serôdio and Sandra Tavares. They own 45 hectares in different Douro villages, 80% of which are old vines. Total production is 180,000 bottles.

2023 was a rainy year with moderate temperatures, allowing the soil to replenish its water reserves after several years of severe drought, especially 2022. Spring was stable, with good flowering and fruit set, giving higher yields than in 2022 and 2020. Summer was hot but without extremes, allowing slow, balanced ripening. The grapes showed good phenolic ripeness, well-defined aromas and good acidity.

The 2023 reds are well-made wines with restrained ripeness, good freshness and balance and well-integrated oak, showing both power and elegance.

2024 had more classic, balanced conditions: a winter with good rainfall, properly replenishing water reserves; a stable spring, favouring balanced vegetative growth; and a moderate summer, with good day-night temperature swings and no heatwaves, promoting slow, complete ripening.
