I had the pleasure of tasting the Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva 2016 and was truly impressed by its elegance, freshness and balance. It is a wine that expresses sophistication naturally, already revealing great aging potential.
It has a clear and bright cherry colour, with a medium-high layer and garnet rim, which shows some evolution without losing its liveliness. On the nose, it stands out for its aromatic intensity and complexity: balsamic notes emerge — brioche, toast, vanilla, caramel and cinnamon — which surround a fruity core rich in black plum, wild strawberries, ripe currants and blackberries. A harmonious, refined and very seductive bouquet.
In the mouth, it reveals excellent structure and balance. The freshness and polished tannins show the care with which it was aged in barrels. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, with a delicate aftertaste that invites contemplation.
Based on 95% Tempranillo from the vineyards of Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas (Rodezno) and 5% Graciano from the Montecillo estate (Fuenmayor), this Gran Reserva confirms the classic and distinctive style of Rioja Alta.
It is no coincidence that it received 96 points from José Peñín, 95 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Robert Parker — scores that attest to the exceptional quality of this wine and with which I completely agree. A red wine of great class, which I enjoyed tasting immensely and which I highly recommend. Paulo Castro
