Baigorri Maturana 2019 (also known as Baigorri Finca Las Navas Maturana) is an "author" red from Rioja, Spain, made exclusively from Maturana Tinta, a native Rioja grape that was almost extinct and has been recovered by Bodegas Baigorri.

Style and Characteristics:
Atkin highlights Baigorri's work with Maturana Tinta, a grape that gives the wine a deep colour and distinctive personality, setting it apart from traditional Tempranillo.

The house style is marked by refined texture, controlled ripeness and great intensity. Wines of this profile often show dense black fruit and a solid tannic structure, benefiting from some time in bottle to integrate the new French oak.

Despite the concentration, the critic stresses the freshness and vibrant acidity Maturana Tinta keeps, ensuring balance even at high alcohol, usually between 14.5% and 15%.

Baigorri Maturana 2019 (also known as Finca Las Navas Maturana) received 94 points from Guía Peñín, beating the previous vintage, which scored 93. It's an intense, attractive, deep dark cherry. On the nose it shows aromatic complexity, with notes of toast, spice and fine cocoa, balanced by a strong presence of black fruit, plus subtle floral and raspberry nuances.

On the palate it's flavourful and fruity, with acidity ensuring freshness. The wine shows a mineral character, well-integrated toast and an elegant finish with a light bitterness that adds sophistication. Guía Peñín highlights it as a balanced example, with the typical personality of Maturana Tinta, a "fleshy" structure and remarkable persistence, confirming its unique, distinctive expression.
