Barón de Chirel is a modern classic that highlights Rioja's identity, tradition and modernity.

The first vintage of Barón de Chirel, 1986, responds to a growing interest in high-quality Rioja. Since its creation, Marqués de Riscal has maintained a close connection with Bordeaux winemaking methods. At that time, Professor Guy Guimberteau, successor to Émile Peynaud, who also had Francisco Hurtado de Amézaga as a student in his oenological training in Bordeaux, was an advisor to the Marquis de Riscal. Later, in 1997, Paul Pontallier, general director of one of Bordeaux's top five crus: Château Margaux, joined. As a result of this bond, the idea of making an experimental wine was born that would recapture the greatness of those mythical Médoc Reserves updated with the means and technology of the 20th century.

Vineyards between 80 and 110 years old were selected with very low yields, grapes of the best quality, produced only in the best harvests when the vineyard expresses the full character of the terroir. “La Nueva Era de Rioja” had just been born. Pioneer and precursor of what was later called “high expression wines”. After the success of its emergence in a market eager for high quality wines, numerous wines began to emerge that followed in the footsteps of Barão de Chirel, with great popularity among the most demanding customers.

On sight: it appears clean and bright, a beautiful cherry red color with violet tones. With medium-high intensity. Garnishes with a lively tone without signs of evolution.

Aromas: It is a tremendously expressive wine, with great aromatic intensity of small ripe black fruits (blueberries, currants, cassis, plums, sour cherries in liqueur), graphite, mineral, licorice, subtle notes of terroir tones of blue flowers (violet), vegetation creeping (leaf silk, moss). Autumn memories when the leaves fall. Warm spices like cloves and black pepper, cocoa and tobacco with splendid definition. Light leather at first comes out with oxygenation. The wood is perfectly integrated.

The mouth: The entry into the mouth is powerful, dense with great richness. Combining volume, structure, richness with silky texture, it never ends. Bright and present tannins, but mature this time will polish. It is very long and persistent, elegant with a formidable acidity that predicts a great aging.
