Description
Château Cos d'Estournel is a Second Growth of the 1855 classification in Saint-Estèphe, recognisable by the oriental-style pagodas of its cellar and a direct neighbour of Pauillac. Its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines are famous for their depth and aromatic exoticism, and 2016 is one of the most acclaimed vintages in the estate's recent history. It was rated 100 from Robert Parker, 97 from Decanter, 96 from Wine Spectator and 100 from James Suckling.
In the glass it shows a deep colour and a nose of ripe black fruit, cedar, tobacco and graphite, with fine spice that gains complexity with air. The palate is structured and elegant, with firm yet polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, persistent finish.
Decant one to two hours ahead and serve at 16–18 °C with roast kid, lamb chops, dry-aged beef or hard cheeses. It is a wine built for the long haul that rewards patient cellaring.
