Description

Poeira Tinto 2021 is the pure expression of Jorge Moreira's vision of the Douro, a wine of firm, sophisticated character. From old vines in Provesende, it combines many traditional grapes with the elegance of Touriga Nacional. The nose is complex and refined, with notes of black fruit, graphite, tobacco and violets, wrapped in a light balsamic touch. On the palate it stands out for its tension and precision, with a satiny texture and fine tannins, conveying just the right amount of austerity. A wine that combines strength and refinement, with long persistence, authentically reflecting its terroir and its maker's philosophy.

I retasted the 2021 Poeira, which now carries the subtitle “44 Barrica”. It's a wine that at first seemed quite modern to me, but which I now consider to have a very classic Douro profile. It has always been a more elegant, less extracted version with less oak influence than other reds of the valley, made from a mix of grapes from old vines.

It shows notes of wild berries, aromatic herbs and flowers, with the characteristic resinous touch of rockrose so present in the region's rural landscape. This time I found it more refined, with the perfume that made me fall in love with vintages like 2001.

So I'm updating the score and drinking window. It shows moderate ripeness, 13.5% alcohol and good acidity and freshness, coming across as balanced, elegant and medium-bodied, with refined tannins. A very well-built, balanced wine able to develop favourably for many years.

13,200 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in July 2024.

Poeira, or Quinta do Poeira, is the family project of couple Jorge Moreira and Olga Martins. They own nine hectares in Provesende, in the Pinhão Valley, where the winery is, with vines between 21 and 70 years old, plus two hectares in Covas do Douro, planted in 1950. Total production is about 40,000 bottles.
