Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva 2016 - Fresh, intense, sophisticated and seductive - Vinogrande

Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva 2016 - Fresh, intense, sophisticated and seductive

1 min read Paulo Castro

I had the pleasure of tasting Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva 2016 and was truly impressed by its elegance, freshness and balance. It is a wine that expresses sophistication effortlessly, and already shows great ageing potential.

It has a clear, bright cherry colour of medium-high intensity with a garnet rim, hinting at some development without losing vivacity. The nose stands out for its aromatic intensity and complexity: balsamic notes — brioche, toast, vanilla, caramel and cinnamon — wrap a fruity core rich in black plum, wild strawberries, ripe redcurrant and blackberry. A harmonious, refined and very seductive bouquet.

On the palate it shows excellent structure and balance. The freshness and polished tannins reveal the care taken in its barrel ageing. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, with a delicate aftertaste that invites contemplation.

Based on 95% Tempranillo from the Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas vineyards (Rodezno) and 5% Graciano from the Montecillo estate (Fuenmayor), this Gran Reserva confirms the classic, distinctive style of La Rioja Alta.

It is no coincidence that it received 96 points from José Peñín, 95 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Robert Parker — scores that attest to the exceptional quality of this wine, and with which I fully agree. A red of real class that gave me enormous pleasure to taste and that I wholeheartedly recommend. Paulo Castro
