The Guía Peñín (Guía Peñín de los Vinos de España) is the annual guide that Spanish customers — and Portuguese buyers of Rioja, Ribera, Bierzo and Rías Baixas — already know by name. A 100-point scale, tasting Spanish wines, in dated editions (on our product pages it appears as, for example, "2026 edition").
At Vinogrande, Peñín has no internal tag like RP94. It's written out in full on the product page: "Guía Peñín awarded 95 points". That's how we quote it. No sentence, no number.
What the guide does
Peñín tastes thousands of Spanish wines a year. Each score comes with a short description and often the guide's own verdict: excellent, very good, and so on. It isn't a single critic in the Parker mould: it's a guide, with a method and a publishing calendar.
In shop practice:
- 90–94 — excellent, the core of what Vinogrande brings in from Spain with a score.
- 95–99 — the top tier; 95 appears on Ribera and age-worthy Rioja pages.
- 100 — the Alabaster 2022 product page, for example, mentions a perfect 100 from Peñín. It's rare; not the norm on the shelf.
A Peñín 92 for an Albariño doesn't compare with a Peñín 92 for a Toro. The scale is the same; the grape and climate are not.
Why Vinogrande lists Peñín
Because the shop sells Spain seriously — La Rioja Alta, Ribera del Duero, Rías Baixas, Bierzo — and the guide is the reference Spanish producers already print. Ignoring Peñín would mean judging Spanish wines only by Parker and Suckling. Our wine shop in Moledo do Minho quotes whatever source the product page has.
Four wines from the shop (real scores)
Tomás Postigo 5º Año 2021 (Ribera del Duero). On the product page: Guía Peñín awarded 95 points, rating it "Excellent". Tasting note on the page: colour, nose, palate, long life.
Marqués de Riscal XR 2021 (Rioja). On the product page: 95 points in the 2026 edition of the Guía Peñín. The page describes a deep cherry colour, youthfulness and quality among Rioja reds. A dated edition — the calendar goes with the number.
Attis Xión Albariño Rías Baixas 2024. On the product page: Guía Peñín rated the wine 92 points, saline elegance. Alongside: Suckling 92 and Tim Atkin 92. Three 92s, three names.
Attis Embaixador 2021. On the product page: Guía Peñín: 94 points, tasted in May 2024, ripe fruit, dried herbs, freshness. Same page: Suckling 92, Atkin 93. Peñín's 94 is the highest of the three, and even so it doesn't "win" the page. All three stay.
How to read a score before you click "buy"
- Which edition of the guide? A 95 from 2026 isn't a 95 from 2019.
- Don't convert Peñín into Grandes Escolhas. They are different countries and scales (100 vs 20), even when the number "looks" similar.
