Description

The winter of 2003/2004 was very dry, with only a third of the previous winter's rainfall. The lack of water early in the growing season greatly reduced disease pressure. In July, the main worry was that the vines might not ripen the grapes enough because of the drastic water shortage.

The harvest stood out for perfect weather throughout. The young Ports showed good structure, with very fresh wild-berry aromas, the result of a cooler-than-normal ripening period.

Tasting Note:

A very concentrated wine with aromas of intense black fruit and bitter dark chocolate. It feels like an immense, restless wine waiting to express itself. It fills the mouth completely — almost overwhelming in its intensity. Then a range of flavours hits the senses — bitter dark chocolate, rich ripe black plum, cherries, blueberries and blackberry jam. The wine is chewy, meaty and full of grip. Although it has great structure, the balance is finely tuned, so the sense is of a wine of enormous strength but also great delicacy and elegance. Flavours of cassis, blackberries, liquorice and molasses excite the palate, with a deliciously, pleasurably long finish.

Wine Enthusiast, Best of 2007 – 97 Points

Bottled in July 2006, this wine remains deliciously open, showing floral and violet perfumes interwoven with rich layers of plum and chocolate. Although the firm structure is evident, there's more than enough fruit to balance it. A lovely combination of power and elegance.
