Description:

Notes of the Year:

The 1985 harvest was preceded by an exceptionally cold and wet winter, with night temperatures in early January well below freezing. The formation of the berries was excellent and the clusters formed perfectly. The summer was hot throughout the region, with no rain during July and August.

Fonseca started harvesting earlier than many other producers, with the harvest taking place in ideal conditions before the rain that fell at the end of September. The conditions for fermentation were ideal, resulting in musts of exceptional color and density.

Tasting Note:

Deep dark ruby with a broad red halo turning brick color at its tip. Generous and seductive nose, impregnated with black currant and cherry. Dense and lush black fruit intertwined with dark chocolate, licorice and roasted coffee.

Exotic and resinous herbal aromas emerging one hour after decanting. Later, the fruit becomes juicier and creamier, with rich raspberry jam flavors layered over the dark fruit base.

The full-bodied, round mouthfeel is supported by thick, well-integrated tannins, offering an abundance of delicious chocolate and blackcurrant flavor, which remain in a long, velvety finish. A wine that is between youth and maturity.

Press Notes:

"Full-bodied. Powerful. Still opaque; smooth, sweetly fleshy. Well endowed with fruit, alcohol and tannins for longevity. My style of wine. Magnificent. Drinkable between 1998-2030. Potentially outstanding." ( Michael Broadbent MW, The Great Vintage Wine Book II, 5 stars )

"One of the great successes of the vintage. Dense ruby/purple, with an oriental spice box aroma, the 1985 is an expansive, sweet wine, with broad flavors, fabulous depth, concentration and balance."( Robert Parker, The Wine Buyers Guide, 90 Points ).
