Jacquesson Dizy Corne Bautray Brut

This majestic vintage Champagne is made by one of the region's leading producers, Champagne Jacquesson, from a superb 1-hectare plot called “Corne Bautray”, planted with Chardonnay in 1960. This single vineyard lies in Dizy in the Vallée de la Marne, on a steep south-west-facing slope with chalk and gravel soils, ideal for a high-quality Blanc de Blancs.

The Extra Brut Premier Cru Dizy - Corne Bautray is showing brilliantly, opening in the glass with a youthful bouquet of citrus oil, clear honey, preserved rhubarb and subtle notes of fresh pastry. On the palate it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with an incisive spine of acidity, considerable concentration and a long, vibrant finish.

This is an unusually tense, vibrant rendition of this cuvée, and Jean-Hervé Chiquet notes that in the 2008 vintage this typically rich wine embraced its Chardonnay origins more evidently than usual. It's a magnificent wine that will delight Champagne purists.

All 5,488 bottles and 304 magnums were disgorged with no dosage in April 2018. As readers may know, the south-west-facing Corne Bautray parcel, planted in 1960, is characterised by gravel and marl soils over a base of Campanian chalk.
